Does Social Networking breed Success? July 6, 2008

Or is it the other way round? I guess most folks would agree that successful people know how to network, and it’s an important corollary that this unique trait is actually an important indicator of success. No kidding! In light of that, i was glad to read an article on the seven traits of successful people.

And Trait #5 was that successful people build their networks. Here are the salient points from that post:
When I was younger I thought I could get ahead on the merit of my good performance and work ethic alone. I was wrong. Networking is essential.
True networking is about building relationships at all levels inside and outside of your work environment
Although socializing in large gatherings is still a hard pill for me to swallow, I’ve learned that it’s not the only way to network. It’s not the number of people that you know, but who you know, and the quality of these relationships that matter.
It’s the quality of these relationships that matter, which by the way has always been LinkedIn’s motto or should I say it’s greatest takeaway, IMO. I think online social networking sites both enable and enhance our ability to nurture these relationship even after you lose direct contact with many of these folks (think ex-colleagues).
So, what do you think?
Are social networking skills imperative for success or not?

Absolutely, networking skills are necessary for success. Either you will use networking during face to face meetings or on business networking sites like Linkedin, Schmoozii, or Xing. Your network will ultimately push you forward in subjective evaluated professions.
Networking skills are extremely necessary for success. If I had poor networking skills on (and off) line, then I would be unable to market Salesconx properly or grow my own network.
The future of networking is obviously social networking. LinkedIn has REALLY helped me (and Salesconx) gain some valuable partners and contacts along with FastPitch, Biznik, Recession Crusher, and Facebook. Staying active on a handful of networks where my targets spend their time is the best way for me to reach helpful individuals and I highly recommend other small businesses to do the same. It takes time and effort to really figure out each networking site, but with some dedication, one can really reach tons of valuable people daily.
Can’t wait for the next entry!

Hi @Gina & @Theronn,
Wow! Quite a few networks you’ve got there. What amazes me is that even a more time sensitive person can find an online social networking site that can help build their brand online.
If you’ve more time, I’d definitely recommend a blog since that ties all these pieces together (IMO).
Thanks for reading.
