Top 15 Corporate Blogs (Ranked – May 2008) May 5, 2008

… the series is back. Frequent readers of the blog will realize that some of the big hits on my blog related to either my listing of the Top 10 CEO Blogs or the Top 10 Corporate Blogs.

Interestingly, while I waded more deeply into the realm of the corporate blogosphere and as they have been sprouting everywhere (from Dell to Facebook and the one I helped launch at LinkedIn), I’ve not had the time to pursue ranking that series but enough is enough.

So starting this week, I’ll be publishing the Top 10 15 Corporate Blog rankings on a regular basis. Yay!

I’m also mulling the idea of a series of interviews with the face of these corporate blogs to learn more about how corporate blogs happen, benefits, goals, etc… Stay tuned for that as well. But, I digress…

Methodology. I’m using Technorati authority to help navigate the corporate blogosphere terrain. This term made most sense to rank corporate blogs for 2 reasons.

1. Popularity

“It is the # of blogs linking to a website in the last 6 months. The higher the number, the more authority the blog has”.

Not only does that give a clear indication of the popularity, it also provides context for this rank in the past 6 months. You’ll be surprised at the number of dead blogs in the list, since the last ranking.

2. It’s the number of blogs vs. number of links that’s being measured

It is important to note that we measure the number of blogs, rather than the number of links. So, if a blog links to your blog many times, it still only count as +1 toward your authority. Of course, new links mean the +1 will last another 180 days

Do you find that many of the blog are just written for them versus written by them? I have emailed several corporate blog and get responses from their assistants.

Interesting. I wonder, however, if more mainstream companies (non tech) should be ranked against internet companies? Internet companies probably have more to gain from social media tools than a larger, established brand (my personal opinion, of couse). The revenues from most of the companies dwarf most of the tech companies, save perhaps Google. As many internet companies also use it as a product and marketing channel, a company like Delta, for example, wouldn’t have as much material to “link” to.

P.S. congrats on doing such a great job on the LI blog!

Thanks a lot, bud. BTW, you should add the Mint blog to the New PR Wiki (http://tinyurl.com/jnaqr).

I do think companies like Delta will continue having content (for e.g. see Southwest’s revamped social media portal – http://tinyurl.com/635o55).

However, I totally agree that there are two kinds of corporate blogs –
1. Fortune 500 (bigger companies)
2. Internet Companies

I’m trying to figure out a more accurate differentiator, but you’re right, the challenges and goals for the two kinds of companies and their respective corporate blogs are quite different.

The very purpose of blogging/social media efforts would be defeated if they’re not written by them.

I’m sure sooner vs. later, authentic voices will filter to the top of every corporate blogging initiative.

Mario – Tom from Kodak here. We are happy to make the list and I don’t think #13 is unlucky in this case! To respond to Mark’s comment I can speak to the Kodak blogs and tell you that all posts are written by the individuals themselves. We are not editors or copywriters and sometimes it shows – especially with my posts! We do feel we have stories to tell and pictures to share and judging by the reactions we have seen since Sept 2006 when we launched other people do to! -tom

Ok, at the cost of sounding overly competitive and single-minded, I looked into the Technorati rankings for Yahoo!’s Yodel Anecdotal and I think I’ve discovered the fly in the ointment. Back in January, we had to change the domain from yodel.yahoo.com to ycorpblog.com (our “Paranoids” didn’t like that we were sitting on the yahoo.com domain with a third-party app, and we’ve been doing a domain redirect ever since). Looks like the domain change nuked our Technorati standings, causing us to essentially start over with ycorpblog.com (which is ranked 11K-something with an authority of 447 — not too shabby after 4 months on the clock, I guess).

So word to the wise, pick your domain carefully. If you ever change it, one of those few precious measurement tools will be rendered irrelevant! And I suppose I owe Richard Jalichandra an apology…
