Top 10 CEO Blogs July 9, 2006

Quick update: I’ve recently put together a list of the Top 10 Corporate blogs (Technorati Powered), culled from a list of 124 corporate blogs world-over.
Feel free to check it out at:
Marketing Nirvana’s Top 10 Corporate Blog Rankings (Technorati)
————
Now back to the old post:
OK! I know everybody loves a ‘best-of’ list so I thought why not update my recent post on Corporate Marketing blogs with a post on CEO blogs. But as is worthy of any sequel I thought I’ll up-the-ante with a Top 10 list this time!
I’m sure most of you have heard about Jonathan Schwartz’s blog. Let’s not forget that CEOs are probably the most time-harassed people on the planet so don’t expect any Scobleness from their blogs (meaning regular to-the-hour updates). However, if you want to get a feel for some big-time thinkers espouse their company’s strategy a bit, then maybe the following ten may be worth a ride. Here goes, my Top 10 CEO blogs (in no particular order of preference):
1. Jonathan Schwartz (President & CEO, Sun Microsystems)
2. Craig Newmark (CEO, Craig’s List)
3. Mark Cuban (Owner, Dallas Mavericks)
4. Ross Mayfield (CEO, Socialtext)
5. Matt Blumberg (CEO, Return Path)
6. Alan Meckler (CEO, Jupiter Media)
7. Kevin Lynch (Chief Software Architect, Adobe)
8. Robin Hopper (CEO, Founder - iUpload)
9. Jason Calacanis (CEO, Weblogs)
10. John Dragoon (CMO, Novell)
Let me add that it took me a while to corral these 10 blogs of C-level executives, what actually left me wondering was whether CEOs are really getting serious about blogs. Think about it: Just 10 CEO blogs from among hundreds of thousands of corporations and small-medium-busineses! David Utter from WebProNews believes CEO blogs may never catch-on:
Anxiously awaiting a high-powered CEO to enter the so-called blogosphere? Keep waiting. CEOs would have to defy their company’s policies on transferring information to the public. And what corporate chief would want to jeopardize a job with a rich compensation package and lavish perks just to talk candidly in a blog?
Do you think David’s right? Maybe/Maybe NOT? But till CEOs get more confident about blogging, just continue reading the blogs of the pioneers listed above.

thanks, much appreciated, by Jim Buckmaster’s our CEO, he really runs craigslist now.
I act as full time customer service rep as well as being founder
Craig
Wow… thanks! great company to be in!
The funny thing is that I’m good friends with #2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7!
On top of that, I was friends with those six of nine *before* blogging started (and I setup Mark’s amazing blog for him!)… I think certain types of folks are wired for blogging. I don’t recommend it for every CEO.
Hi Jason,
You sure are in august company! Not only that, I think the efforts of pioneer CEOs such as yourself is surely worth emulation.
I agree with you that only certain folks are wired for blogging. But in this era of communication overload, your prospective customers sure would be well-served to hear directly from the CEO himself/herself.
Mark is one of those CEOs who really gets it, when it comes to using the blog as an effective PR tool. Ingenious!
Once again, thanks for setting a great example & Keep blogging!
-Mario
Craig,
Thanks for dropping by. Sorry about the mis-mention but I’m sure your blog would qualify since you are the founder.
You probably don’t recall meeting me at a conference. However, I’m a big fan of both the service you provide as well as the example you set as founder.
Keep inspiring!
-Mario
I seriously doubt it will catch on in a big way. Sarbanes Oxley, “forward looking statements” disclaimers, blah blah blah…. I think it’s the very special cases who will take on the risks and challenges of talking WITH their customers and not AT them.
Great list! I also watch Bob Parson’s (www.bobparsons.com) and Paul Allen’s (www.paulallen.com). I think it’s the great CEO’s that work to talk WITH their customers. It allows us insights into what makes them tick, and the ones that communicate successfully, get more of our business!!
[...] Those are some extremely cool blogs! Can read more on that list right here. [...]
G,
SOX and other regulations may be a hassle but I believe the smart CEO will find a way to avoid the pitfalls, and at the same time connect with their target audience.
Wait for a few years and you’ll notice the landscape changing drastically.
Thanks for your comment.
Mario
Smith,
You’re right. Bob and Paul are two great additions. I’ve decided to make the Top 10 CEO list a monthly fixture on my blog and I’ll be scouring the web for all CEO blogs.
So come back for more and feel free to email me your choices.

Jonathan Schwartz (President & CEO, Sun Microsystems) 2. Craig Newmark (CEO, Craig’s List) 3. Mark Cuban (Owner, Dallas Mavericks) 4. Ross Mayfield (CEO, Socialtext) 5. No offense to Kevin, but he hasn’t posted to his blog in many months and was sporadic even before that — given the nature of blogging, shouldn’t being somewhat current and active be important for being considered a “best of”?
Hi Nathan,
You’re right. I’m working on a revamped, accurate Top 10 CEO Blog List. Keep reading. I’m launching that post shortly.
Thanks for commenting.
Mario
Hi Mario,
Nice list; I particularly enjoy the blogs from Cuban, Meckler, and Schwartz.
The real trick will be to come up with a top ten that isn’t comprised of all tech industry CEOs. Mark Cuban still counts as one with HD Net, I think.
Imagine the insights someone like Procter & Gamble’s executives could provide on business and management, for example.
Mario — thanks for the mention. Much appreciated.
Matt Blumberg
Hi David,
You’re right-on! I’m working on updating my Top 10 CEO Blogs list w/ more accurate Technorati rankings. The new list will also expand into all other fields, not just technology CEO blogs.
Also, tomorrow I’m launching the Top 10 Corporate Blog rankings.
Let me know what you think.
Mario
Matt,
Congrats!
I’m working on Technorati powering my Top 10 CEO Blogs listings. I look forward to seeing you on that list as well.
Thanks for dropping by.
Mario
You should make a Top Ten Page our of this list at TopTenSources (www.toptensources.com) - so that we can read them all at one place!

Hi Bela,
That’s a good idea. I’ll look into it this weekend.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Mario
I just came across this collection-very good.Shall also start my blog later today-now I am hurrying to office after a meeting.
Hi RN,
Glad to see you’re being nudged into the blogging bandwagon. I look forward to checking it out after you start.
Please do keep me posted.
Mario
Hi Mario:
Being a C-suite exec and blogger I find most it nothing short of unbelievable that more of my peers do not blog…That being said I also find many CEO blogs to be either benign or ridiculous. Whether you’re a C-suite executive or average joe you need to actually have the ability to blog to pull it off…A recent post entitled “To Blog or Not To Blog” (http://www.n2growth.com/blog/?p=27) articulates this position in greater detail.
Thanks Mario.
Cheers,
Mike
Mike,
As Jason Calacanis says, blogging is not for everyone. But what I find surprising is how C-suite execs aren’t adept at communicating? Isn’t that a part of the job description?
I think the main reason for them not blogging is probably a lack of time and I’m hoping things will change sooner vs. later.
Thanks for the comment. Keep reading.
Mario
Thanks for putting together the list Mario. Great idea. I mention four of these CEO blogs in my new book: The Corporate Blogging Book (Penguin Portfolio - August 2006). I’ve also got a chapter specifically addressing CEO blogs: “Should the CEO Blog?” The answer of course is “yes and no” - for the reasons you and your commenters state above. I tend to be an idealist so I’m hoping more and more top dogs will adopt this way of communicating and thinking aloud.
Hi Debbie,
Congratulations on the book release. I’m trying my best to track corporate blogging via my Marketing Nirvana.
Your book is a valuable addendum to a list of resources for CEOs to ponder.
Feel free to check back when I Technorati rank CEO blogs.

Hi Mario,
I can vouch for Scott’s Blog. I have seen many styles of management. This one is unique. He has taken company public and grown the company with multiple acquisitions, all this in just 5 years. It’s commendable! He’s a truly Passionate and Dynamic leader who has proved his worth by action. His recent entry on his visit to lebanon just reiterates how different a leader he is!
